Tips & tricks

Copy hashes and older files, preview changes, and use staging shortcuts.

Markdown

Copy a commit hash

Select a commit in the main history list. Keep that list focused and press Command+C. Paste the full hash wherever you need it. With the list focused, choose Edit > Copy Commit Hash. You can also right-click a commit and choose Copy Commit Hash.

Copy an older file into Finder

Right-click a file and choose Show File History. Select a revision in the File History list and press Command+C with that list focused. Open a folder in Finder and press Command+V to paste the historical file.

With the list focused, choose Edit > Copy File. You can also right-click a revision and choose Copy File.

File History copies the actual file version. Main history copies the commit hash. Selected text still uses normal text copying. For a deleted revision, export uses the previous available file version.

Preview files with Space

Select a file and press Space for Quick Look. Use Up Arrow and Down Arrow to browse nearby files. Committed files use their historical version; staged-only changes use the staged version; unstaged files use the working copy. Deleted files use their previous version. During amendment, files labeled Already in Last Commit use the last commit's version.

Stage from the keyboard

In Working Changes, select files and press S to include or exclude them. Press Command+Shift+Return to stage every file that can be committed. Conflicts must be resolved separately. Press Command+Return to commit.

Use the folder icon and Option key

Hover over the repository title to reveal its folder proxy icon. Command-click the title to browse enclosing folders, or drag the icon into Finder, Terminal, or another app.

Hold Option in the toolbar to change Pull or Merge to Rebase, and Push to Force Push. Force Push runs without confirmation and uses force-with-lease to check the expected remote state. Check the selected branches first. See Sync with another branch.
