Find a change

Search commit messages, file paths, and changed text.

Markdown

Search repository history

Press Command+F, or click the search icon, and enter words from the change you want to find. Search includes commit messages, authors and committers, hashes, file paths, and indexed patch text across branches and tags.

For example, login timeout finds commits with both terms. They can occur in different metadata fields or different changed files within the same commit. Enter "login timeout" to search for that phrase.

Use Match Case for case-sensitive matching or Regular Expression for a pattern. See Search syntax for matching rules and limits.

Inspect a result

Select a commit to read its full message and changed files. Click a parent hash to navigate to that parent commit. Matching text is highlighted. A highlighted file icon means that its indexed patch contains a match. Select the file to read the matching excerpt.

Relevance is the default sort order. Choose Newest First to browse matches by commit date. More results load as you scroll.

Check indexing progress

Search results are incomplete while indexing continues. Open Search Status from the search field's menu to see progress, or use that menu to pause and resume indexing.

Search covers changed text and nearby context, not every complete historical file. For versions of one file, use File History.

To return to normal history, focus the history results list and press Escape. You can also click Clear Search. When you switch repositories, GitLode clears the previous repository's query.
